Choosing a Thesis Topic

One of the hardest parts is choosing your thesis topic.  Some spending months even years on this research project because they did know the how to choose a great topic. Choosing a right and meaningful dissertation or thesis topic is a difficult decision to make.

Here are some guidelines to consider when choosing a dissertation or thesis topic:

  • Broaden your thinking. Identify different research project and build ideas.  Write down ideas so that you will have the time to re-scan ideas and modify ideas that you will have the feeling of not going anywhere.
  • Choose the topic that you are interested. As much as possible, choose a topic that you love.  You will spend so much time for your research project so it is necessary that you will enjoy what you are doing.  Try not influenced by others into writing about a certain topic.
  • Be realistic in choosing topic. Don’t think that your research will draw international attention to you.  Always consider the fact that you are fulfilling an academic requirement and the idea and the whole research project should be a learning experience to you.
  • Pick a topic that is related to your field. Find a topic that will be helpful in your field.
  • Select topic that your adviser finds interesting and is knowledgeable about. But also it is possible to change your advisor than changing your topic.
  • Find a topic that you already have some expertise. This is not a time to explore a brand new area.
  • Select a unique topic. Make sure that your topic has not been done before. Pick an idea that stands out which are original and innovative.
  • Choose a manageable topic. Your adviser will help you limit your topic.

Writing Importance or Significance of the Study

In this section, the researcher states the value or importance of the research study. It is where the significant contributions of the results of the study are itemized.  It will justify the reason for your study.

In writing the importance or significance of the study, the researcher or writer must explained the rationale, timeless and or relevance of the study to existing conditions. Also, the possible solutions to existing problems or improvements must be identified.  It should also discuss the implications such as the possible causes of the problems discovered, the possible effects of the problems, and the remedial measure to solve the problems.  The good points of the systems being continued or to be improved must included in this section.

In addition, it must be shown who are the individuals, groups or communities who may be placed in a more advantageous position on account of the study.

Writing Thesis Introduction

Introduction is one of the most important parts of thesis.  That’s why you should pay attention to it if you want your work to be noticed.  Your thesis introduction should arouse interest to your reader.

Thesis introduction is a 2 to 3 pages discussion and should not exceed to 3 to 5 pages. Also the language of your introduction does not have to be complicated.

Of course, you don’t need to tell everything but it should enable your readers to see at a glance the entire contents of your research work. Thesis introduction may be composed of three paragraphs.

The first paragraph of your thesis introduction should provide your readers a mental warm-up, hence giving them information and readiness as to what the research is all about.  It should introduce the study and justify the problem.

The second paragraph stated the statement of the problem, the scope and coverage of the study and the purpose of the study.

The third or last paragraph is a sort of closing portion that is intriguing and challenging your readers to become interested in knowing the results of the study.

Thesis introduction plays very important role in the life of your project so it is important to give so much attention in writing your introduction.  If your thesis introduction fails to perform its function, the life of your project is under threat.

Guidelines to Thesis Title

One of the critical parts in thesis writing is the proper way of writing a title.  There are some rules applied in writing the title.

The following are some guidelines in writing the title

  1. The title should be clear and distinctively stated.
  2. Subject matter of the study, the place of the study, the population involved, the period when the data were gathered should be included.
  3. The variables being examined should always be written as part of the title.  Choose terms that will summarize the variables if there were many variable being studied.
  4. Title should be short.  It should not exceed twenty words.
  5. Title should not contain acronyms.
  6. Some forms of title phrasing such as “Study of…..”, An analysis….”, “A Preliminary Study of……..” are to be avoided.
  7. Title should not contain formulas, symbols or subscripts or other non-alphabetic symbols instead word substitute should be used.
  8. In case the title contains more than one line, it should be written like an inverted pyramid, all words in capital letters.
